Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker that trips is doing its job. Here is how to tell an overloaded circuit from a genuine fault — and which one means you should stop resetting it.

A tripping breaker is not a faulty breaker. It is a breaker doing exactly what it was installed to do: cutting power before a wire gets hot enough to start a fire. The useful question is never “how do I stop it tripping” — it is “what is it protecting me from.”

There are three answers, and you can usually narrow it to one before anybody comes out.

It trips when you run several things at once

This is an overloaded circuit, and it is the most common cause by a wide margin. A 15-amp circuit gives you about 1,800 watts. A microwave and a kettle together will clear that on their own, and if that circuit also feeds the toaster, you have found your answer.

The tell is repeatability: it trips when a specific combination of things is running, it resets cleanly, and it holds until you do the same thing again.

What to do: move one appliance to a different circuit — and check it really is a different circuit, not another outlet on the same one. If everything you need genuinely has to run in the same room, the fix is a new dedicated circuit, not a bigger breaker.

Never fit a larger breaker to stop an overload trip. The breaker is sized to the wire behind it. Fitting a 20-amp breaker on 14-gauge wire removes the protection and leaves the wire to act as the fuse.

It trips instantly, with nothing plugged in

This is a short circuit or a ground fault, and it is a different situation entirely.

The tell is that load makes no difference. You unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, and it trips immediately or within a second or two.

What to do: leave it off and call an electrician. That breaker is holding back a fault somewhere in the fixed wiring — a damaged cable, a failed device, water where it shouldn’t be. Repeated resetting is the one genuinely dangerous response, because each reset dumps fault current into whatever is broken.

If there is also a burning smell, a warm faceplate or scorching, treat it as urgent rather than as a scheduling problem.

It trips at random, and it has got worse over time

Breakers wear out. They are mechanical devices with a thermal element, and after enough trips — or enough years running near capacity — they start opening below their rated current.

The tell is history: the same circuit, the same load it has always carried, now trips in a way it never used to, and the trips are getting more frequent.

What to do: this one is worth diagnosing rather than guessing. A worn breaker and an early-stage loose connection look similar from the outside, and a loose connection makes heat. Both are fixable; only one is urgent.

What to note before you call

Whatever the cause, the same four details save real diagnostic time — which is your money, since diagnosis is billed by the hour:

  1. What was running when it tripped, including anything that cycles on by itself like a fridge, a freezer or a well pump.
  2. Whether it resets and holds, resets and trips again shortly, or won’t reset at all.
  3. Which breaker it is, and what else goes dead when it opens.
  4. Anything you can smell, hear or feel — a hum, a warm cover plate, a sharp smell.

That list is usually enough for us to arrive with the right parts rather than making two trips.

When it is not the breaker at all

Two cases get mistaken for breaker problems regularly.

A tripped GFCI upstream will kill several outlets at once while the breaker stays on. Check bathrooms, the kitchen, the garage and outside walls for a receptacle with a reset button before assuming the panel is involved.

An AFCI breaker — required on most living-area circuits in newer homes — trips on arcing signatures rather than current. Certain motors and older power tools set them off without anything being wrong. If the trips started when you began using a specific tool, mention that.
